Severe cold in Kashmir, minimum temperature in Srinagar drops to minus 5.1 degrees Celsius

Srinagar: The minimum temperature in Jammu and Kashmir dropped below zero on Monday. Normal life has been affected due to the increasing cold. The minimum temperature in Srinagar city was minus 5.1 degrees Celsius, while in Gulmarg and Pahalgam it was minus 6.5 and minus 8.4 degrees Celsius.
The minimum temperature in Jammu city was 7.2 degrees Celsius, 6 in Katra city, 2.6 in Batote, minus 0.6 in Banihal and minus 0.4 degrees Celsius in Bhaderwah. The Meteorological Department said in a statement, “On January 13, the weather in Jammu and Kashmir will be mainly clear and dry. On January 14, it will be cloudy and the weather will be dry. On January 15 and 16, it will be generally cloudy and there will be light snowfall in the high altitude areas in the morning of January 16. It will be generally cloudy from January 17 to 19 and there is no possibility of rain till the 19th. “

Along with this, tourists and travelers have been advised to follow the advisory issued by the traffic department. People in Jammu division celebrated ‘Lohri’ festival, which marks the end of the winter season. It is generally believed that after Lohri, there is a slight improvement in the weather, but the 40-day severe cold continues in the valley till January 30.

The 40-day period of severe winter, locally called ‘Chillai Kalan’, started on December 21 and will end on January 30. Doctors have advised people, especially children and the elderly, to stay indoors. They should not stay outside for long, it can cause hypothermia. Due to which blood clots in the body and there is a risk of heart attack.

Let us tell you that due to lack of electricity in the valley, people are more dependent on traditional methods to keep themselves warm. The earthen stove woven in a willow wicker basket is called ‘Kangri’, which is filled with embers and a loose warm cloth is kept under the ‘Phiran’. Even when all the modern heating equipment does not live up to their expectations, Phiran and Kangri support the Kashmiris.
