Sensex-Nifty rise 500 points on tariff relief and fund flow, Asian markets rise

Mumbai Mumbai: Stock market benchmark indices Sensex and Nifty rose in early trade on Thursday after two days of decline. This reflected the rise in Asian markets amid positive developments on the US tariff front. Besides, foreign fund inflows pushed the stock markets upwards. The 30-share BSE benchmark index Sensex jumped 504.57 points to 81,816.89 in early trade. The NSE Nifty climbed 137.25 points to 24,889.70.

Among Sensex companies, Infosys, Tata Steel, Tech Mahindra, HCL Tech, Tata Consultancy Services, Sun Pharma, Tata Motors and HDFC Bank were the top gainers. UltraTech Cement, Bajaj Finance, Bajaj Finserv and Nestle lagged behind. A US federal court has barred President Donald Trump from imposing sweeping tariffs on imports under the emergency-powers law. The striking down of reciprocal tariffs by a US federal court is a clear message that the President cannot influence markets and the economy with his questionable decisions.

“This court’s decision is the second major setback for President Trump, after the bond market forced the Trump administration to pause tariffs for 90 days. This is a positive development from the market perspective,” said V K Vijayakumar, chief investment strategist at Geojit Investment Ltd. In Asian markets, South Korea’s Kospi, Japan’s Nikkei 225 index, Shanghai’s SSE Composite index and Hong Kong’s Hang Seng were trading in the positive territory. US markets closed with losses on Wednesday.

Foreign institutional investors (FIIs) bought shares worth Rs 4,662.92 crore on Wednesday, according to exchange data. India’s industrial output growth slowed to 2.7 per cent in April 2025 due to poor performance of manufacturing, mining and power sectors, according to official data released on Wednesday. Global oil benchmark Brent crude jumped 1.11 per cent to $65.62 per barrel. The 30-share BSE barometer rose 239.31 points or 0.82 per cent to $65.62 per barrel. closed 0.29 per cent lower at $1.50 a barrel. On Wednesday, the Nifty fell 73.75 points or 0.30 per cent to 24,752.45.
