Samsung SDI appoints Choi Joo-sun as new CEO amid reshuffle

SEOUL SEOUL: Samsung SDI, the battery and electronic materials manufacturing unit under Samsung Group, said on Thursday it has appointed Samsung Display chief Choi Joo-sun as its new CEO as part of a reshuffle of the group’s leadership. Choi, 61, began his career as an engineer in the memory chip development team at Samsung Electronics before moving into management roles and has served as Samsung Display’s CEO since late 2022.

Known for his technical expertise and leadership skills, Choi has played a role in enhancing the semiconductor’s technological competitiveness and promoting growth in the display business, reports Yonhap news agency. “We expect Choi to continue to lead Samsung SDI’s innovation and corporate value enhancement based on his successful knowledge and leadership,” the company said. In a related move, Samsung Display promoted Vice Chairman Yi Chung to president and CEO, filling the position left by Choi.

Yi, a veteran of display technology, has made significant contributions to the advancement of LCD and OLED during his tenure at Samsung Electronics and Samsung Display. Additionally, Samsung Global Research, the group’s think tank, has set up a special management consulting office to support affiliates in improving organisational and operational efficiency, the company said.

Current CEO of Samsung SDI Choi Eun-ho has been named the head of this new initiative. Meanwhile, Samsung on Wednesday announced its new leadership focusing on the semiconductor business, a clear move to strengthen its future competitiveness in the sector.
