Recounting of postal ballots begins in Sringeri constituency, figures create stir

Karnataka: The re-examination and counting of postal ballots for the Sringeri Assembly seat in Bengaluru, Karnataka, began on Saturday. This process was initiated following an order from the Karnataka High Court, which, while hearing a petition challenging the election results, ordered a recount.

This case relates to the 2023 Assembly elections, in which losing candidate D. N. Jeevaraj challenged the election of winner T. D. Rajegowda. In his petition, Jeevaraj questioned the counting of postal ballots and demanded a fair investigation. The court, considering the matter serious, ordered a re-examination and counting of postal ballots a few days ago.

Election officer Gaurav Kumar Shetty, while briefing the media, said that the initial figures emerging from the recount are concerning. According to him, Congress candidate T. D. Rajegowda received 569 votes, while Bharatiya Janata Party candidate D. N. Jeevaraj received 692 postal ballots. This difference has sparked renewed debate about the election results.

Regarding the final results of the May 2023 Assembly elections, Congress candidate T.D. Rajegowda received a total of 59,171 votes, while D.N. Jeevaraj received 58,970. This leaves a margin of just 201 votes between the two candidates, which is considered extremely small. This close contest has made the role of postal ballots even more crucial.

Election experts believe that when the margin of victory or defeat is very narrow, postal ballot counting can prove decisive. In such cases, any error or oversight could impact the election outcome. Therefore, the court’s order for a recount is considered an important step toward ensuring transparency in the process.

Extensive attention is being paid to security and transparency during the recount process. Under the supervision of officials, postal ballots are being rechecked, and records are being maintained for each stage. Representatives of all concerned parties have been allowed to be present during this process to avoid any potential disputes.

This matter is also considered politically significant, as it could not only affect the outcome of an assembly seat but also the credibility of the election process. Both major parties are closely monitoring the matter and awaiting the upcoming results.

The recount process is currently underway, and the final results are pending. Only after this will it be clear whether the election results will change. This entire development has created a new stir in state politics.
