Ramesh Bais has been a veteran BJP leader, he has been an MP from BJP seven times. He started his politics in 1978 as a councilor in Raipur Municipal Corporation. In 1980, he became an MLA for the first time in undivided Madhya Pradesh. In 1989, he was elected MP from Raipur Lok Sabha seat for the first time. After this, he was elected MP seven times in a row from 1996, 1998, 1999, 2004, 2009 and 2014. During this time he was also a minister in the central governments.

On 29 July 2019, he was made the Governor of Tripura. After this, he also took over the responsibility of Governor in Jharkhand and Maharashtra. At present, he has retired from the post of Governor of Maharashtra and returned to his home state.
