Rain havoc across the country: 35 dead in Gujarat; flood situation worsens in Assam.

Gujarat: The monsoon has wreaked havoc across several states in the country. In Gujarat, 35 people have lost their lives in the last two days due to incessant torrential rains and flooding, while thousands have been moved to safety. Meanwhile, the flood situation in Assam remains critical; several rivers are flowing above the danger mark, and lakhs of people have been affected.

Rains Spell Trouble in Gujarat
The southern districts of Valsad and Navsari are the worst-hit. According to the state government, 35 people have died in the last two days due to the rains and related incidents, with the majority of these fatalities recorded in Valsad and Navsari districts.
Continuous rainfall has caused several rivers to swell. Waterlogging in low-lying areas has disrupted road connectivity and thrown normal life out of gear. Many villages have been cut off from urban centers, and traffic on national and state highways has also been affected.

Rescue of Over 7,000 People
State administration, NDRF, SDRF, and local rescue teams have intensified relief operations. So far, more than 7,000 people have been moved to safety, while approximately 42,000 people have been evacuated from affected areas as a precautionary measure. Arrangements for food, drinking water, and medical facilities have been made in relief camps.

Damage Assessment Begins
With the intensity of the rain subsiding, the administration has initiated a survey to assess the damage to crops, houses, and public property. Simultaneously, cleanup drives are underway in flood-affected areas, and insecticides are being sprayed to prevent waterborne diseases.

Deepening Flood Crisis in Assam
The flood situation in the northeastern state of Assam also remains a cause for concern. Persistent rains have caused the water levels of the Brahmaputra and its tributaries to rise. Villages in several districts are submerged, and a large number of people have had to take shelter in relief camps. Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke to Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma over the phone to take stock of the flood situation and assured him of all possible assistance from the central government. According to officials, the death toll in the state has risen to 62, and relief and rescue operations are ongoing.
Weather Department Warning
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast heavy to very heavy rainfall in Gujarat, Assam, and several other states over the next few days. People have been urged to stay away from riverbanks and waterlogged areas and to follow the administration’s advisories.
Relief Agencies on Alert
The NDRF, SDRF, Army, and local administration are continuously carrying out relief and rescue operations in the affected areas. Stranded individuals are being moved to safety with the help of boats and helicopters. The administration has appealed to the public not to pay heed to rumors and to rely solely on official information.
