Punjab: Two more people arrested in cyber fraud case
Punjab: The Sriganganagar cyber crime police have arrested two more suspects from Sonipat jail in connection with the Rs 1.5 crore cyber fraud involving Jaswinder Kaur and her husband Sohan Singh in November. Those arrested include Rohan Bhavsar from Bhopal and Saif Ali from Vidisha in Madhya Pradesh. The police team had earlier reached Bhopal on December 19, but the suspects were caught and detained by the Sonipat police hours before their arrival. A separate case of cyber fraud of Rs 63 lakh has been registered in Sonipat and the two are being questioned in connection with that case as well. Earlier on December 29, the police had arrested Ishan and Piyush from Bhopal in connection with the same cyber fraud case involving elderly couple Jaswinder Kaur and Sohan Singh of Chak 22-ML near Sriganganagar. Besides, three youths from Jaipur – Mohit Soni, Kishan Singh Rajawat and Ajay Prajapat – were arrested for allegedly allowing the fraudsters to use their bank accounts to transfer the stolen money.
With the recent arrests, seven people have been nabbed so far but the prime suspect, the alleged kingpin of the racket, is still absconding. Jaswinder Kaur and Sohan Singh were “digitally arrested” by the fraudsters on November 13 and 14 after Rs 1.5 crore was siphoned off from their bank accounts. Following the arrest of the three suspects from Jaipur, the family of one of them deposited Rs 5 lakh in the complainant’s account as part of the recovery process, the only partial recovery so far. Sohan Singh, who had recently sold real estate, reported the incident to the police on November 16. He informed that he was “digitally arrested” by callers pretending to be CBI officers. These callers falsely questioned him about the large sums of money deposited in his bank accounts. Sohan later revealed that he was duped of Rs 1.05 crore during the fraudulent “digital arrests” on November 13 and 14. It is still not clear how the fraudsters came to know about the sale of Sohan Singh’s property or how they obtained his phone numbers.
