Punjab: Tricolour missing from flagpole for years

Punjab: Once a symbol of patriotism and national pride, the 105-feet high flagpole near the rest house along the national highway in Phagwara now lies bare, with the Tricolour unfurled for many years. Erected with much fanfare by former local bodies minister Anil Joshi on August 5, 2015, the flagpole was touted as a landmark to inculcate a sense of nationalism and attract tourists. Rs 13 lakh was spent on the project and the national flag fluttered proudly atop the structure for many years. However, since 2018, the pillar has remained mostly flagless, with over 36 flags getting torn or blown away due to bad weather.
The last flag was hoisted ahead of Independence Day on August 14 last year, but that too did not last long. No concrete action has been taken despite repeated appeals from residents to use wind-resistant fabric to withstand the brunt of the weather. When contacted by The Tribune, Phagwara Municipal Corporation Commissioner Dr Akshita Gupta assured that steps would be taken to restore the flag. “We will look into the matter and take all necessary measures to keep the spirit of patriotism and nationalism alive in Phagwara,” she said. For now, the huge structure stands as a stark reminder of neglect, awaiting the day when the tricolour will once again fly high in the sky.
