Punjab: Supreme Court reprimanded the state for absence of lawyer

Punjab: The Supreme Court on Monday slammed the Punjab government over the absence of its lawyers in cases and asked the state’s advocate general to ensure their presence. A bench of Justices JK Maheshwari and Arvind Kumar made the observation while hearing the government’s plea against the Punjab and Haryana High Court order granting bail to former minister and SAD leader Bikram Singh Majithia on August 10, 2022. “Sir Advocate General of Punjab, we have already summoned you in a case.

In your state, even after service of notice, your panel lawyers are not appearing in the Supreme Court. We have already mentioned this in two orders. This is a daily drama. The state of Punjab means being absent. This is not only happening in criminal cases, but also in civil cases. Nobody is appearing,” the bench said. The apex court adjourned the hearing on the plea filed by the Punjab government for two weeks after it sought time. Punjab Advocate General Gurminder Singh apologised to the court on the issue and assured that it would not happen again. The Supreme Court had directed Majithia to appear at the Special Investigation Team headquarters in Patiala.
