Punjab: Set up screen-free zones for kids

Punjab: Dr Tarsem Singh urges parents to promote healthy eating habits. As a paediatrician and neonatologist, I have seen the disastrous consequences of ignoring important aspects of a child’s health. Vaccinations, nutrition and screen time are three critical areas that require attention and care. Ignoring these red flags can have long-term effects on a child’s health, making it essential for parents to stay informed and take proactive steps. Vaccinations are a vital defence against deadly diseases. However, some parents delay or skip vaccinations due to misinformation or forgetfulness, putting their children at risk. The consequences can be severe, leaving children vulnerable to infections such as measles, diphtheria and whooping cough. To ensure your child gets the necessary protection, follow the government-recommended vaccination schedule, keep vaccination records and set reminders for booster doses.
A balanced diet is vital for a child’s growth and development. Unfortunately, the prevalence of fast food and processed snacks has led to unhealthy eating habits. A poor diet can lead to deficiencies, digestive problems, and frequent illnesses. To promote healthy eating habits, encourage eating homemade meals rich in protein, vitamins, and minerals; minimize the intake of fruits, vegetables, and whole grains; limit sugary drinks and processed snacks; and consult a pediatrician if your child is a fussy eater. While technology is an indispensable part of modern life, uncontrolled screen time can be harmful to a child’s health. Excessive screen time can lead to disruption of sleep patterns, lack of physical activity, and behavioral and emotional problems. To minimize these risks, limit screen time to 1 hour a day for children under five years of age and 2 hours for older children, encourage physical activity, reading, and creative hobbies. Establish a screen-free zone at least 1 hour before bedtime.
