Punjab: ‘Operation Satark’ launched to stop drug smuggling across the border

Punjab: Police on Friday night carried out checks at various sensitive locations near the inter-state border on Abohar-Sriganganagar road under ‘Operation Satark’ and searched suspicious vehicles and individuals. The drive has been launched in the wake of reports of drug smugglers mainly from Fazilka, Tarn Taran and Amritsar districts visiting villages along the international border in Sriganganagar and Anupgarh to pick up heroin packets dropped by Pakistani smugglers using drones. Deputy Superintendent of Police Sukhwinder Singh Brar led the night-time operation during which personnel from various police stations of Abohar sub-division set up checkpoints and thoroughly checked dozens of vehicles entering Punjab and headed towards Rajasthan at midnight.

Officers said the police is committed to identify and nab criminal elements with professionalism and determination. They said drug smuggling from across the inter-state border and from areas within Punjab would be rooted out with the active support of the public, encouraging citizens to come forward and share vital information without any fear. Apart from strengthening the second line of security on the international border, the police also focused on inter-district and inter-state checkpoints during the operation. Security measures were further strengthened in these areas. Bus stands and railway stations as well as other important and sensitive places were also covered. Under the operation, the police confirmed the identities and locations of suspicious persons.
