Punjab: Kabaddi player turned sprinter Harjeet Singh sets new record

Punjab: Punjab’s emerging sprinting talent, Harjeet Singh (28), performed brilliantly at the National Athletics Series-5 held in Sangrur on May 9th, securing first place in the 100m race with a time of 10.32 seconds. With this victory, Harjeet also set a new personal best and established himself as one of Punjab’s fastest sprinting talents. Interestingly, Harjeet started his career as a kabaddi player. He played kabaddi during his school days before switching to athletics. He explained, “Kabaddi improved my agility and speed, which later came in handy in sprinting. This transition was challenging for me, but hard work and coaching took me to new heights.” Harjeet represented Punjab in the race, which was organized under the Athletics Federation of India’s Indian Series initiative. This initiative aims to promote athletics in different regions of the country and provide a platform for national-level athletes. By participating in this competition, Harjeet not only showcased his talent but also brought Punjab pride on the national athletics map. Currently, Harjeet is training under coach Sarabjit Singh Happy at the Sports College in Jalandhar.
His new success has once again established Jalandhar as a hub of sprinting talent in Punjab. The city has produced several international athletes over the past few years, further strengthening its athletics legacy. Harjeet hails from Majri village, Fatehgarh Sahib. His family and coach have praised his hard work and dedication. His coach, Sarabjit Singh Happy, said, “Harjeet has a hard work and dedication. His new record proves that with hard work and proper guidance, every goal can be achieved.” Harjeet’s success is not only inspiring local youth but has also created a new enthusiasm and competitive atmosphere in the athletics field of Punjab. He clarified that his goal is to bring glory to Punjab and India at the international level.
