Punjab: Guava orchard case accused granted bail

Punjab: A Mohali court has accepted the bail plea of Sukhdev Singh, an accused in the Rs 137 crore guava orchard compensation case linked to land acquisition for the Greater Mohali Area Development Authority’s (GMADA) Aerotropolis Township project at Bakarpur village. The VB had arrested Sukhdev on February 12 on charges of fraudulently receiving compensation of around Rs 12 crore in his and his wife’s accounts in connivance with government officials and others.
The court granted him bail after hearing the defence and prosecution and directed him to submit a bond of Rs 50,000. The VB said Sukhdev was allegedly evading legal proceedings. So far, 23 people, including seven government officials, have been arrested in the case. The VB alleged that Sukhdev purchased 3 kanal and 16 marla land in Bakarpur to claim illegal compensation for guava orchards during the land acquisition process for the Aerotropolis project. Later, he allegedly conspired with the main accused Bhupinder Singh, a resident of Bakarpur, and falsely claimed to have a fruitful guava orchard on his land.
