Punjab: Goat milk, once considered a simple rural dietary staple, is now rapidly gaining popularity.

Punjab: Goat milk, once considered a humble staple of rural life, is now gradually forging a new identity—one that represents a blend of tradition and modern innovation. During the Animal Husbandry Fair held at Guru Angad Dev Veterinary and Animal Sciences University, health-boosting products derived from goat milk—which promise prosperity for farmers as well as consumers—became a major topic of discussion. Goat cheese, Chèvre, and goat milk soap were showcased at the university’s stall. At another stall hosted by Green Pockets, a company from Rajasthan, goat milk ghee and khoya were displayed—products the company intends to launch in the market very soon.
Bhupinder Brar, CEO of Green Pockets, stated, “Goat ghee is highly nutritious and possesses a high concentration of short- and medium-chain fatty acids. It is inherently cleaner and features a delicate, nutty flavor derived from the mineral-rich, diverse fodder consumed by the goats. The khoya will be prepared in accordance with customer demand.” Keeping these natural benefits in mind, university scientists have developed Chèvre cheese—a soft, tangy delicacy that is not only delicious but also easy to digest. This innovation has opened up new avenues for goat farmers to capitalize on the growing demand for artisanal, health-conscious dairy products.
However, the story of goat milk’s rising popularity does not end there; it has now also ventured into the realm of skincare, marked by the introduction of goat milk soap. Rich in Vitamins A and D, and naturally moisturizing due to its fat content, this soap serves as a gentle alternative to chemical-based cleansers. At the Animal Husbandry Fair, crowds of curious visitors—particularly young women—flocked around the stall, drawn in by the soap’s natural fragrance and texture. Inderpreet Kaur, Head of the Department of Dairy Economics and Business Management, said, “Goat milk is rich in vitamins and minerals. When used in soap, it helps provide moisture to the skin.”
