Punjab: Gangster shot dead near Golden Temple

Punjab: Gangster-turned-social activist Ravneet Singh alias Sonu Mota was shot dead in the narrow lanes of Kathianwala Bazaar near the Golden Temple on Tuesday evening. The incident took place in the market behind the Akal Takht. According to the police, the assailants led by gangster Abhiraj Singh alias Abhi Pehalwan stopped Sonu Mota when he was on his way to Gurdwara Guru Ka Mahal. He was accompanied by an accomplice. The assailants were reportedly monitoring Sonu’s movements for the past several days. As Sonu entered the busy market area, the assailants stopped him by blocking his way on a scooter.
Abhi Pehalwan took out a pistol and opened fire on Sonu, following which Sonu sustained five bullet injuries. Sonu’s accomplice attempted to retaliate, but the assailants managed to escape. Shopkeepers informed the police about the incident. By the time an ambulance reached the spot, Sonu had died. Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police (City-1) Vishaljit Singh said the prime suspect is Abhiraj Singh. He said a case has been registered and raids are being conducted to nab all the suspects. “The prime suspect has been identified and we are actively looking for clues. All those involved will be arrested soon,” the ADCP said. Sonu has several criminal cases registered against him.
