Punjab: Former head of minority panel wrote a letter to Canadian MPs

Punjab: Former National Commission for Minorities (NCM) chairman Tarlochan Singh has written to Canadian Sikh MPs and Akal Takht Jathedar, asking them to work towards repealing a Quebec law that bars government employees, including police and teachers, from wearing religious symbols like veils and turbans. “I have come to know that a law in Quebec (Canada) prohibits government employees, including teachers, police officers and judges, from wearing turbans,” Singh wrote in a letter to Canadian Sikh MPs and a separate letter to Akal Takht Jathedar. “I fail to understand why Canadian Sikh MPs have not raised the issue yet. The SGPC too is perhaps not aware of this Canadian law,” he added. “The Catholic hierarchy can be approached for help. Sikhs in Britain have got similar laws amended,” he added.
