Punjab: Field officer arrested for embezzling Rs 2.78 lakh

Punjab: Hanumangarh police have arrested a 31-year-old field collection officer from Abohar for embezzling Rs 2.78 lakh. Bharat Bhushan Shakya, a resident of Naya Abadi, Abohar, was working for non-banking finance company (NBFC) Satin Creditcare Network Ltd when the fraud came to light. Superintendent of Police Arshad Ali confirmed that Shakya’s arrest came following an investigation into a case filed by the company’s regional manager Wasim Akram on July 12, 2024.

Akram informed that the company provides financial services to women in groups, with field collection officers being responsible for collecting loan installments and depositing them. However, Shakya was depositing only half of the amount collected and signing the rest as if he had been paid. The discrepancy came to light after some women complained to the company, following which an audit was conducted. The audit revealed that Shakya had embezzled Rs 2.78 lakh between January 31 and March 8, 2024. The court has taken him on remand for further questioning.
