Punjab: Farmer leader sent to judicial custody for questioning minister in training camp

Punjab: Farmer leader Nirmal Singh Sidhu of Bharti Kisan Union (Ekta Sidhupur) of Jassiana village, who had publicly questioned Agriculture Minister Gurmeet Singh Khudian during a farmers’ training camp on Saturday and was later taken into preventive custody, has been sent to judicial custody. Nirmal was produced before the Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM) who sent him to judicial custody. Some farmers said that Nirmal had raised concerns related to the hybrid variety of paddy, but the police stopped him and took him into custody.
Later, he raised some slogans condemning the state government for suppressing the voice of farmers. Meanwhile, farmer leader Jagjit Singh Dallewal had planned a gathering of farmers at Doda village here on Tuesday. A police officer on condition of anonymity said that farmer leader Nirmal Singh tried to spoil the atmosphere at the public event when Agriculture Minister Gurmeet Singh Khudian was addressing the gathering. “Nirmal was taken into preventive custody. Later, the SDM court sent him to judicial custody,” the official said.
