Punjab expands scheme to increase maize production

Punjab: The Punjab government has decided to expand the Kharif Maize Project in the state, expanding it to 16 districts. This scheme has been launched to ensure higher production and better income for farmers. According to agricultural experts, the project aims to increase maize production, encourage crop diversification, and strengthen the state’s food security. The Punjab Agriculture Department stated that the Kharif Maize Project was initially successful in a few districts. Given this success, the government has now decided to expand it to other districts of the state. According to the department, farmers will be provided with high-quality seeds, advanced farming techniques, and irrigation facilities to achieve better production.
The Punjab Agriculture Minister stated, “This scheme to increase maize production will prove beneficial for our farmers. It will not only increase their income but also ensure the availability of maize in the state. We are also providing technical support, fertilizers, and modern farming equipment to farmers.” According to government data, maize was cultivated in six districts under the project last year, with production increasing by approximately 20%. This time, by expanding the scheme to 16 districts, the government has further strengthened farmer participation and production capacity. Agricultural experts say that maize is an important Kharif crop and is also crucial for the animal husbandry and food processing industries. Increasing maize production in the state will not only meet local needs but also expand commercial production and export opportunities.
Farmer organizations and farmer representatives have welcomed the scheme, stating that this initiative will provide new hope and a source of stable income for farmers. They also requested the government to provide farmers with benefits such as crop insurance and marketing assistance under the scheme. The Punjab government has also clarified that the objective of the Kharif Maize Project is not only to increase production, but also to improve the quality of life of farmers and encourage them to practice sustainable agriculture. To this end, the state government will organize training camps, workshops, and technical guidance programs. Experts believe that the expansion of the Kharif Maize Project will ensure balanced agricultural development in the state and provide long-term benefits to farmers. This will improve maize production and related industries in Punjab and increase investment opportunities.
