Punjab: E-challan machines make traffic fine payment easier

Punjab: The introduction of e-challan machines has made the process of paying fines for traffic violations in Malerkotla much more convenient. Equipped with these machines, the traffic police can now accept cashless payments for fines on the spot, greatly reducing their workload. Earlier, violators would often argue or use their influence to avoid paying fines, but the new system has led to quicker resolutions, with many drivers agreeing to pay after only a little resistance. Almost all traffic enforcement teams operating checkpoints or nakas are now equipped with e-challan machines, although traditional challan books are still available.
The change has been welcomed by both law enforcement and local leaders, as it has eliminated the need for drivers to travel to distant offices to pay fines. Balveer Singh, in-charge of the traffic team, said the public is increasingly understanding the importance of fines for routine violations such as not wearing a helmet, not using a seat belt or wrong parking. Nagar Parishad Ahmedgarh chairman Vikas Krishan Sharma said they have received fewer calls from residents seeking intervention after police increased blockades for the National Road Safety Month in January. He admitted that the facility of paying fines on the spot has reduced the number of complaints. The new system is proving to be a relief for both the traffic police and vehicle owners, as it reduces bureaucracy and speeds up the payment process.
