Punjab: Doraha flyover in urgent need of repair

Punjab: The Doraha flyover, a crucial link on the toll road connecting Jalandhar to Panipat, is in a pathetic condition, with commuters facing inconvenience and risks due to lack of infrastructure. Potholes, worn-out expansion joints and crumbling surface have made travelling on the flyover a challenge for motorists. These issues have been ignored by the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), leaving commuters frustrated. The condition of the flyover has deteriorated further in the past one year, with potholes at several places causing traffic snarls. Deep potholes in some areas have led to both major and minor accidents as drivers, unaware of the sudden dangers, crash into them at high speeds. Many motorists assume the road will be smooth but are left shocked by unexpected potholes. The flyover’s expansion joints have worn out, increasing the gaps between the slabs. The poor condition of the road not only makes travelling uncomfortable but also poses a threat to the bridge’s structural integrity.

As vehicles keep hitting the cracks frequently, experts have warned that the bridge may suffer further damage, jeopardising both its life and the safety of commuters. Pawan Kumar Kaushal, a senior citizen and social activist from the area, expressed his concern: “If vehicles keep hitting the cracks, it will definitely affect the life of the bridge and the safety of the users.” The frustration of commuters is palpable. Despite paying hefty toll fees, many feel that the NHAI has failed to maintain the road to an acceptable standard. “This bumpy road has been going on for months now but the authorities have shown no interest in fixing it. The NHAI should be made aware of the situation through the media so that they can finally take some action,” another commuter said, expressing his annoyance: “None of the routes are flat. We are paying high toll fees for a bad road.” When contacted, NHAI engineer Ankit assured that the tender for repairing the Doraha flyover has been approved. “The work on the flyover has been identified as a major repair, and the process of clearing potholes and milling will be started soon,” he said.
