Punjab: Disabled people demanded increase in pension

Punjab: Disabled people protested against the state government for going back on its promise to increase pension. Disabled people gathered at Nehru Park and demanded that their pension be increased from Rs. 1500 to Rs. 5000.
Balwinder Singh, an activist of Lok Adhikar Lehar Punjab, said that a campaign will soon be launched across the state for the welfare of the disabled.

Apart from increasing the pension, the government was asked to ensure free education and treatment for the children of disabled people and 100 days of work under MNREGA.
The protesters said that there is no special arrangement in Abohar for the convenience of the disabled. Deaf and dumb children have to go to Faridkot, 100 km from Abohar, to get their certificates made. The protesters demanded that the government provide the facility of mobile vans in Abohar to examine the disabled and make their certificates.
