Punjab DGP: 3,400 constables will be recruited to overcome staff shortage

Punjab: The police department has decided to recruit 3,400 constables to address staff shortages. Director General of Police (DGP) Gaurav Yadav said on Tuesday that he would also promote 1,600 personnel—150 inspectors, 450 sub-inspectors, and 1,000 assistant sub-inspectors. The DGP said that in addition to the direct recruitment of 3,400 constables, 4,500 district cadre posts would also be filled in a phased manner. He ordered a resource audit to reduce the workload in police stations, especially in NDPS cases, and the deputation of head constables. He said, “Personnel recruitment will be done in due course.” Chairing a virtual meeting to review ongoing operations against organized crime, drug trafficking, and terrorism, Yadav directed officers to remain vigilant and committed to ensuring peace, harmony, and security of all citizens.
The DGP asked police officers to take a tough stand against gangsters. He said, “Identify the gangsters’ associates and put them behind bars. You have the full protection and support of the department. Deal with gangsters fearlessly.” He added, “Every officer, from constable to SSP, will be held accountable, and no laxity will be tolerated on the gangster and drug front.” The DGP praised his police force for its work under the “War Against Nasiyan” campaign, which has achieved an 87 percent conviction rate in NDPS cases. Yadav stressed the need for professional investigation to identify the source of consignments and establish back-and-forth links to catch the “big fish.” He urged officers to make maximum use of Section 64A of the NDPS Act, which provides an opportunity for rehabilitation to drug users caught with a few grams of contraband. He said the Safe Punjab anti-drug chatbot has seen a 35 percent FIR conversion rate and urged officers to take public information seriously.
