Punjab: Despite the ban, trees were cut in Sangrur Civil Hospital

Punjab: Despite the ban on felling of trees in Sangrur and its surrounding areas by the Punjab and Haryana High Court, trees are being felled in the Civil Hospital premises these days. A total of 17 green and dry trees are to be felled for the construction of a building for the Critical Care Unit (CCU). The CCU will be set up under the Pradhan Mantri Ayushman Bharat Health Infrastructure Mission. Sources said that these trees were auctioned by the authorities a few days ago for Rs 1,02,100.
Today some trees were felled in the hospital premises, which has angered environmentalists. Dr Baljit Singh, Senior Medical Officer (SMO) of Civil Hospital Sangrur, said that the Civil Surgeon had written a letter to the Sangrur SDM a few months ago regarding the trees in the hospital premises, where the CCU block was to be built. After this a committee was formed, which marked the trees for felling and later the auction was done.
