Puducherry: As the sale of marijuana and other drugs is increasing day by day, the police have increased their preparedness to deal with the situation. People are demanding that marijuana and other drug trafficking be completely eradicated and strict action be taken against marijuana smugglers. The Puducherry police have launched campaigns like Operation Amla and Operation Trishul to seize marijuana and other drugs, arrest those selling them and put them in jail. While the police are taking steps to control the menace, a town has decided to take the law into its own hands. In Veerampattinam village near Puducherry, the village panchayat has decided that anyone caught using or selling marijuana will be expelled from the village.
They have also pledged that they will never support the sale of marijuana or other drugs. If anyone is caught selling ganja and someone supports it, the village panchayat will also take action against those supporters. They have warned the public about this decision through loudspeakers, saying that anyone caught using marijuana will be expelled from the city. Regarding this, the Gram Panchayat said that the police and the government alone cannot end the practice of marijuana and other drugs and the public will also have to contribute something in this. That is why they have decided to expel anyone caught consuming marijuana in Veerampattinam village. This step of the Panchayat may not be legally correct or feasible. In this regard, a lawyer told Local18 that expelling someone from the city is against constitutional law and only the court can convict someone. Till then it is wrong to say that no one can enter the city. This can be accepted only when the police bans entry into the city. Otherwise, it is illegal for the Panchayat or the villagers to say that no one can enter the village.
