Possibility of rain in Tamil Nadu until March 22.

Tamil Nadu: The Chennai Meteorological Department has stated that thunderstorms accompanied by lightning are likely to occur in Tamil Nadu until Sunday (March 22).

In a statement issued on Wednesday, the Meteorological Department noted: “Due to a prevailing low-level circulation extending from the Gulf of Mannar to South Interior Karnataka, moderate rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning is likely to occur at isolated places across the regions of Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal from Thursday (March 19) through March 22. On March 23 and 24, light rainfall is expected at one or two places in the districts situated along the western foothills and in South Tamil Nadu. The remaining areas of Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal are expected to experience dry weather conditions.”

On Thursday, the skies over Chennai and Puducherry are expected to remain partly cloudy. Light rainfall, accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning, is likely in some parts of the city.

Rainfall: In Tamil Nadu, the highest rainfall—90 mm—was recorded at Varattupallam in the Erode district during the 24-hour period ending at 8:30 AM on Wednesday. Other notable rainfall figures include: Kalugumalai (Thoothukudi) – 80 mm; Vattamalai Reservoir (Tiruppur), Nagapattinam (Nagapattinam), and Usilampatti (Madurai) – 50 mm each; Karaikal (Karaikal) – 40 mm; and Andipatti (Madurai), Periyur (Madurai), Vembakottai (Virudhunagar), Tiruvadanai (Ramanathapuram), Ammapettai (Erode), Sathya (Madurai), Valparai, Valparai Taluk Office (Coimbatore), Cholavandan, and Vadipatti (Madurai) – 30 mm each. Temperature: The statement further indicated that maximum temperatures across the regions of Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal are likely to remain slightly below normal at isolated places until March 22.
