Police stops protest march of Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad members in Siliguri
Tension prevailed at Tinbatti More in the southern part of Siliguri on Monday afternoon when Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) supporters and members organized a march towards Uttarkanya to protest against the atrocities in Sandeshkhali and crimes recorded against women across Bengal.
At 3 pm, around 200 ABVP supporters gathered at the station feeder road. From there they started marching towards Uttarkanya on Burdwan Road.
A large contingent of Siliguri Metropolitan Police was deployed at Teenbatti turn to stop the march. Temporary barricades of bamboo and iron railings along with water cannons were installed on the road.
At 3.30 pm, ABVP supporters reached the spot and tried to break the barricade. The police reacted and chased away the supporters with batons.
Some ABVP supporters were arrested and put in police vehicles.
An ABVP supporter said, “We were holding a peaceful rally when the police lathicharged us.”
Senior police officials said that as soon as the protesters tried to remove the barricades, they were dispersed.
In all, 22 people have been detained so far, police said.
