POCSO Case: Youth Sentenced to 20 Years in Prison

Tamil Nadu: On Thursday, the POCSO Court in Villupuram sentenced a young man to 20 years of imprisonment and imposed a fine. This case pertains to the sexual assault of a girl near Villupuram, wherein the youth was alleged to have promised to marry the victim.

K. Kujan (26), a resident of V. Sathanur village in the Villupuram district, was accused of sexually assaulting a 16-year-old girl from the same locality on May 2, 2021. It was alleged that he had promised to marry the girl. The victim filed a complaint at the Villupuram All Women Police Station. Subsequently, the police initiated an investigation into the matter.

Following this, the police at the Villupuram All Women Police Station registered a case against Kujan under various sections, including the POCSO Act, and arrested him on May 28, 2021.

The final hearing of the case took place on Thursday at the Villupuram POCSO Special Court. During the proceedings, after Kujan’s guilt was proven, S. Vinotha—the presiding judge of the POCSO Court—sentenced the accused to 20 years of rigorous imprisonment and imposed a fine of ₹10,000. Subsequently, the court police took Kujan into custody and transferred him to the Cuddalore Central Prison. The judge also directed the government to provide a compensation of ₹2 lakh to the victim. Advocate Gandhimathi represented the government in this case.
