Delhi Delhi: The Indian automotive industry has witnessed a major shift towards electric vehicles. As the Indian government is constantly pushing for alternative fuel vehicles, there have been several policies, schemes, and infrastructure developments that have helped in the growth of EVs in India. Under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, between 2014 and 2024, the adoption of electric vehicles in India has grown from a negligible 0.01 per cent in 2014 to 7.31 per cent in 2024. This increase in EV adoption marks a significant change in the country’s transportation landscape.

Which government policies are shaping EV adoption in India?
The Government of India has implemented several policies to shape EV adoption in India. It started with the FAME (Faster Adoption and Manufacturing of Electric Vehicles) scheme and under the FAME-II scheme, ₹839 crore was allocated for setting up public charging stations for EVs. Recently, the PM e-Drive scheme was launched in October 2024, replacing the FAME scheme. It was launched with an outlay of ₹10,900 crore and under this, ₹2,000 crore has been allocated for the development of EV charging stations.
