PM Modi to inaugurate 3 medical colleges, AIIMS in Assam

Guwahati (IANS) | Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate the campus of the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in Guwahati as well as three medical colleges during his upcoming visit to Assam next week. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma gave this information on Sunday. PM Modi will also launch several projects, including the state government’s ambitious Ayushman Assam initiative.

Speaking to mediapersons in Guwahati on Sunday, Sarma said: Three recently formed medical colleges – Nalbari, Kokrajhar and Nagaon have received the approval of the National Medical Commission (NMC) to start admissions to MBBS courses. The Prime Minister will virtually inaugurate three medical colleges from Guwahati on 14 April.

The construction of AIIMS campus at Changsari near Guwahati has also been completed. The Prime Minister will also inaugurate the new campus.

According to Sarma, there has been a substantial increase in medical seats in the state in the last few years and with the addition of three new medical colleges, the total admission capacity in MBBS courses in 12 medical colleges across the state has gone up to 1500.

Sarma said, PM Modi will also introduce the Ayushman Assam scheme, which will offer 5 lakh health insurance to all families with ration cards. The Prime Minister will launch a project to distribute 1 crore 10 lakh cards. 27 lakh families will get Ayushman cards.

In addition, PM Modi will officially launch a multi-specialty hospital and the Assam Advanced Healthcare Innovative Institute (AAHI), both of which will be located on the IIT Guwahati campus. The institute will use state-of-the-art technologies and will have a research institute, a post-graduate medical college and a 350-bed multi-specialty hospital.

The Chief Minister said that this is the first of its kind collaboration between IITs and health professionals to produce indigenous equipment for public health.

PM Modi is about to lay the foundation stone of a bridge over the Brahmaputra that will connect Sualkuchi to Palasbari area. The bridge will be constructed at an estimated cost of Rs 3,197 crore.

Along with this, the Prime Minister will also inaugurate the newly established 500 tonne capacity methanol plant of Assam Petrochemicals Limited, Rang Ghar beautification project.

The Assam government is also eyeing a Guinness Book record for the Bihu festival on April 14, where 10,000 artistes will perform. PM Modi will also participate in that program.
