New Delhi: The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has filed a charge sheet against three Myanmar nationals in a major international human trafficking case, involving illegal infiltration and smuggling of foreign nationals mainly of Rohingya origin. India across the India-Bangladesh border. The accused have been identified as Rabi Islam also known as Rabiul Islam, Shafi Alam also known as Sophie Alom and Sayedul Islam and Mohammad Usman. According to the NIA, all the accused are permanent residents of Maungdaw district of Myanmar. According to the NIA investigation, the three accused had entered India illegally without valid travel documents in connivance with smugglers and brokers.

“They were also involved in facilitating the infiltration of several other foreign nationals through unauthorized and illegal border routes,” the NIA charge sheet said. The NIA said that as part of a well-organized network of smugglers and brokers involved in various illegal activities, they were also engaged in luring vulnerable Rohingya women who had taken refuge in Bangladesh to India on the false promise of marriage to Rohingya men. “Such women were sold for forced marriage in various Indian states including UP, Rajasthan, Jammu and Kashmir, Telangana, Haryana etc.,” the NIA said. The NIA investigation also revealed instances and evidence of forgery of documents and established that Rabi Islam and Mohammed Usman had fraudulently obtained Aadhaar cards.

According to the NIA, the two also used these cards to obtain multiple SIM cards and open bank accounts, thereby hiding their real identities. The central agency said that with this chargesheet, the NIA, which began investigating the case on November 7, 2023, has taken an important step towards exposing and dismantling a major international human trafficking racket and network.
