Over 3.37 lakh students enrolled in government schools in Tamil Nadu

Tamil Nadu: The School Education Department has reported that a total of 337,469 students have been enrolled in government and government-aided schools in the state. This enrollment process is ongoing as part of the academic session and is being continuously monitored by the department. This campaign is being rapidly implemented to strengthen the education system and ensure that more children are enrolled in schools.
The state’s education system is vast, with a total of 37,595 government schools and 7,289 government-aided schools. Together, these schools enroll over 5.5 million students. Managing such a large-scale education system is a significant responsibility for the state, and continuous policy reforms and administrative efforts are underway.
According to the Education Department, the enrollment process has already begun in 2024 to increase the number of students in government schools. Previously, this process typically occurred in the later months, but now it’s being initiated in March to ensure more students are connected to the education system in a timely manner. The stated objective of this change is to reduce dropout rates and increase school attendance.
In line with this, the enrollment process for the 2026-2027 academic session began on March 1st. This campaign is being conducted simultaneously in government schools across the state to ensure equitable enrollment across all districts. The Education Department is envisioning this as a comprehensive campaign, with active participation from the local administration and school level.
Meanwhile, headmasters and teachers have emphasized the need for a specific deadline for resolving student complaints. They say that delays in resolving complaints often leave students’ issues pending, impacting their studies. Therefore, establishing a clear deadline will make the grievance redressal process more effective and faster.
Efforts are being made at various levels to improve the education system in the state. In this context, recently, on January 4th, the first day of the new academic year, School Education Minister Rajmohan distributed educational materials and free textbooks to students affected by the crisis. This initiative aimed to ensure that no student is deprived of education due to lack of resources.
On this occasion, the Minister directed officials to further accelerate relief and assistance work in government schools. He stated that ensuring the availability of all necessary resources to strengthen the education system is a priority for the government. Emphasis was also placed on improving school infrastructure.
Education Department officials say that along with the enrollment process, attention is also being paid to improving quality and student facilities in schools. The large number of students joining government schools has made the role of government schools even more important.
According to experts, if the enrollment campaign continues successfully, the number of students in government schools may increase further in the coming years. This will strengthen the state’s education system and improve the level of education in rural areas.
Overall, this initiative by the Tamil Nadu Education Department is being considered an important step towards increasing enrollment in government schools and strengthening the education system. Furthermore, the demand from teachers for a time limit for grievance redressal has emerged as an important suggestion towards making the education system more effective.
