Dehradun: The monsoon has become active once again in Uttarakhand. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an ‘Orange Alert’ for nine districts, forecasting heavy to very heavy rainfall over the next three days. Anticipating continuous rain, landslides, and rising river water levels, the administration has initiated precautionary measures. Consequently, a decision has been made to keep all government and private schools closed in five districts today.
According to the Meteorological Department, spells of heavy rain are likely in both hilly and plain areas. There is a heightened risk of landslides, rockfalls, and road blockages, particularly in the hill districts. Concerns have also been raised regarding waterlogging in low-lying areas and the swelling of small rivers and streams.
The State Disaster Management Department has instructed all district administrations to remain on high alert. Relief and rescue teams have been deployed in vulnerable areas, and the public has been urged to avoid unnecessary travel. Special monitoring is also being conducted along the Char Dham Yatra routes to ensure the safety of pilgrims in the event of adverse weather.
In light of the heavy rain warning, the closure of schools in the five districts prioritizes the safety of students and teachers. District authorities have appealed to parents not to let their children go outdoors and to adhere to weather-related administrative guidelines.
The Meteorological Department has stated that heavy rain accompanied by thunderstorms is likely in several areas over the next 72 hours. Strong winds and lightning strikes are also anticipated in some locations. People are advised to avoid venturing near rivers and streams, staying on hilly slopes, or driving through waterlogged areas.
The administration has activated control rooms to handle any emergencies. Teams from the Public Works Department, Electricity Department, and Health Department have also been placed on alert to ensure immediate relief operations can be launched in the event of a disaster. The state government has appealed to citizens to rely only on official weather bulletins and information issued by the administration, and to avoid rumors. The weather situation is being constantly monitored, and additional precautionary measures will be taken if necessary.
