Operation ‘Blue Star’ to vacant Utkal University hostels ends, illegal occupants including delivery boys and cab drivers evicted

Bhubaneswar: Operation ‘Blue Star’ of the Commissionerate Police to vacant Utkal University gents hostels ended with the eviction of several illegal occupants including delivery boys and cab drivers.
Following the instructions of the university administration, the city police with the support of the hostel wardens, and senior faculty members had launched the ‘Blue Star’ operation to vacant four men’s hostels of the University.
The Warden of P. G. Hostels, after learning about illegal occupation in hostels, had earlier issued a notification asking the outsiders to vacate the hostel rooms on or before September 4. However, the ineligible occupants had protested the move and had locked the hostel warden when he had gone for an inspection on September 2. This apart, they had locked the entrance of the hotels and protested the presence of police and media persons.
However, the University authorities along with the Commissionerate Police decided to launch operation ‘Blue Star’ to forcefully drive the ineligible occupants out of the university campus.
During the large-scale eviction drive, the police team was surprised to find that many non-students including matric fail individuals, delivery boys and cab drivers had managed to get rooms in the hostels meant only for the eligible students of the University.
Besides, a large quantity of liquor bottles, cooking gas cylinders, utensils and other belongings of the illegal occupants were also seized by the police team during the raid that began at 10.30 AM today.
Police had made elaborate security arrangement with the aim to avoid any untoward incident during the eviction that continued till 2 PM today.
According to sources, while Hostel No. 3 was completely sealed during the raid, 25 rooms of Hostel No. 2 and 19 rooms of Hostel No. 1 were sealed. The police also sealed the canteen near Hostel No. 1.
Meanwhile, the university authorities said that the hostels will now be inspected at regular intervals to ensure that no non-student leaves there and hotel rooms will be allotted to the eligible students after renovation.
On the other hand, the Utkal University students have welcomed the eviction of the non-students from the varsity.
