Odisha’s first pediatric modular OT has become operational at Shishu Bhawan in Cuttack.

Odisha: The first pediatric modular operation theatre (OT) has been inaugurated at Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Post Graduate Institute of Pediatrics, popularly known as Shishu Bhawan, in Cuttack. In the first phase, a child’s surgery was successfully performed in the new OT. Hospital authorities said that complex pediatric surgeries will soon be performed regularly at Shishu Bhawan.

Facility to benefit children across the state

This modular OT is equipped to perform surgeries on pediatric patients from all 17 medical colleges in Odisha. Previously, Shishu Bhawan had two general operation theatres for pediatric surgeries, but they were not suitable for complex procedures. The new modular OT will now make major and complex surgeries possible.

Three modular OTs planned with Rs 6 crore funding

The state government has sanctioned Rs 6 crore for setting up three modular OTs on the fourth floor of Shishu Bhawan’s seven-story building. One OT will be reserved for emergency cases, while the other two will be used for routine surgeries. A 25-bed surgical ward has also been opened. Currently, one modular OT is operational. The air inside the OT will be completely sterilized to prevent infections.

Advanced monitoring and teaching support

All surgeries and the activities of the medical team inside the OT will be recorded by cameras. Medical students will be able to watch live surgeries on large monitors for learning purposes. With the commencement of a full-time anesthesia unit, 24-hour surgical services will now be possible in the modular OT. Each unit will have a professor, associate professor, assistant professor, and senior resident who will oversee the three modular OTs and a recovery room.

Details of the first surgery

The surgery on a two-year and 11-month-old boy was performed in the new OT under the supervision of Shishu Bhawan Superintendent Dr. Prabhakar Mishra.

The child was suffering from a congenital condition in which fluid had accumulated in the spermatic cord, forming a cyst. The doctors explained that such conditions cannot be treated with medication alone and require surgery. According to hospital officials, the operation was successful.
