Odisha: Commemorating the pioneering contributions of Utkal Gaurav Madhusudan Das and his daughter Shailabala Das to women’s education, the state government has decided to establish a Madhu Babu Memorial Museum. The museum will be built on the campus of Shailabala Women’s Autonomous College in Cuttack.
This decision was taken at a high-level meeting chaired by the Minister of Higher Education, Sports and Youth Services, and Odia Language, Literature and Culture, Suryabanshi Suraj. It was also decided that the museum would be developed within the college premises, where Madhusudan Das’s conference hall and residential office were once located.
The memorial museum will be developed by the Department of Odia Language, Literature and Culture.
In 1952, Shailabala Das donated her father’s residence to promote women’s education in Odisha, leading to the establishment of Shailabala Women’s College. She also donated her own residence, Madhumandir, to further support the institution.
Addressing the meeting, the Higher Education Minister said that Madhusudan Das and Shailabala Das played a pivotal role in strengthening women’s education in the state. He added that the proposed memorial museum would preserve Madhu Babu’s legacy and inspire future generations.
The meeting was attended by the Commissioner-cum-Secretary of the Higher Education Department, Arvind Agarwal; the Secretary of the Odia Language, Literature and Culture Department, Vijay Ketan Upadhyay; the Director of the Higher Education Department, Kali Prasanna Mahapatra; the Additional Press Secretary to the President, Vijay Kumar Nayak; and the Principal of Shailabala Women’s Autonomous College, Jeevan Ballabh Jena.
