NIA arrests Jaish member in J&K terror conspiracy case

New Delhi (IANS) | The National Investigation Agency (NIA) on Sunday arrested a Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM) member for his alleged involvement in a terror conspiracy case in Jammu and Kashmir. The NIA said that accused Mohammad Ubaid Malik, a resident of Kupwara district, was in constant touch with a Pakistan-based Jaish-e-Mohammed commander.

“Investigation has revealed that the accused was passing secret information to the Pakistan-based commander, particularly about the movement of troops and security forces,” the official said. NIA also recovered various incriminating documents from the possession of the accused indicating his involvement in furtherance of terrorist activities in J&K.

The case was registered suo motu by the NIA on 21 June 2022. It pertains to conspiracies hatched by cadres and Over Ground Workers (OGWs) of various proscribed terrorist organizations in connivance with their commanders based in Pakistan. This includes storage and distribution of huge consignments of narcotics, cash, weapons, Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) including Remote Controlled Sticky Bombs/Magnetic Bombs.

As per the NIA investigation, IEDs and explosives are often being delivered by drones and also being collected locally to carry out terrorist attacks in Jammu and Kashmir. The attacks mainly target minorities and security forces personnel.

Conspiracy is being hatched both in physical and cyber space using encrypted social media with the larger objective of disturbing peace and communal harmony, indulging in terrorist activities and waging war against the Government of India.
