Newly elected MPs will be administered oath in Bangladesh tomorrow

New Delhi. The newly elected MPs who won the general elections in Bangladesh on Sunday will take oath of office on January 10. This information was given in media reports on Tuesday. Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina today paid emotional tribute to Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman after the landslide victory of her party Awami League in the country’s 12th parliamentary elections. He paid tribute by laying floral wreath at the portrait of Bangabandhu inside the Bangabandhu Memorial Museum in Dhanmondi, Dhaka. Sources in the Parliament Secretariat said that the swearing-in ceremony of the new MPs will be held on January 10 at 10 am in the swearing-in hall of Jatiya Sansad Bhawan.

‘Dhaka Tribune’ on Tuesday quoted Awami League Party office secretary Biplab Barua as saying that the Parliament Secretariat is preparing for the swearing-in ceremony to be held on Wednesday. Speaker Shireen Sharmin Chaudhary will administer the oath. Chief Whip Noor-e-Alam Chaudhary said that the Election Commission will publish the election results in the form of gazette on Tuesday. Members are expected to take oath within three days of publication of the Gazette notification. 76-year-old Awami League president and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has been ruling the country since 2009. Overall, he won for the fifth time in a one-sided election on Sunday.

Of the total 299 seats, results for 298 seats have been declared. The ruling Awami League won 222 seats; Jatiya Party gets 11 seats; Workers Party, Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal and Bangladesh Kalyan Party won one seat each and independent candidates won 61 seats. Hasina won the election by a landslide from Gopalganj-3 seat and this will be her eighth term as MP. Cena observed a few minutes of silence after paying tribute to him at the Bangabandhu Memorial Museum here. Sheikh Rehana, younger daughter of Mujibur Rahman and younger sister of the Prime Minister, also later paid floral tributes to the portrait. Prime Minister’s daughter Saima Wajed and Sheikh Rehana’s son Radwan Mujeeb Siddiqui were also present on the occasion.
