Murder of former Sambalpur University VC: Jharsuguda ADJ court sentenced accused to life imprisonment

Jharsuguda: Jharsuguda Additional District Judge (ADJ) court today awarded life imprisonment to the accused who was convicted in the sensational murder of former Vice-Chancellor (VC) of Sambalpur University Prof. Dhrubaraj Naik.

While conducting a hearing of the case, Jharsuguda Additional District & Session Judge Subas Chandra Dhal sentenced the 24-year-old accused, who has been identified as Prabin Dharua of Kuanrmal village under Laikera block of the district, to life imprisonment under section 302 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), informed Additional public prosecutor Gangadhar Garnaik.

The Additional District & Session Judge sentenced the accused to life imprisonment based on the statements and evidences of 22 eye-witnesses and 32 documents, Garnaik said adding that the court also imposed a fine of Rs 10,000 on Dharua.

It is to be noted here that Prabin Dharua hacked the former Vice-Chancellor (VC) of Sambalpur University at the latter’s residence at Sargiguda village under Laikera block of Jharsuguda district on 27 June, 2021.

Dharua had entered Naik’s residence when the latter was not present in the house. He asked Naik for Rs 100 after he returned home. However, he axed Naik and fled from the spot as he (Naik) refused to give him (Dharua) the money. Soon, Naik was rushed to a private hospital for treatment but the doctors declared him brought dead.

Based on a complaint filed by the family members of Naik, the accused was arrested and forwarded to the court.
