‘Munjya’ chose me, not anyone else: Abhay Verma

Mumbai: Actor Abhay Verma, whose horror-comedy hit ‘Munjya’ is now out on OTT, has shared that for him, the film coming to him was somewhat like a spiritual intervention. Set against the backdrop of Pune and Konkan, ‘Munjya’ revolves around Bittu (played by Abhay Verma) who is madly in love with Bela (played by Sharvari) but when he visits his hometown, he realises that his past and ancestral history is surrounded by demons and paranormal activities that he is not aware of. Talking about the film, Abhay said, “I feel ‘Munjya’ chose me and not the other way round. Any creative endeavour like this is a huge one to choose… It is more than spiritual for me and with Bittu receiving such massive love, it felt like my prayers were being heard by the audience in the form of the Almighty.”

She added, “I am very happy to know that this family is going to get even bigger, as Disney+ Hotstar is the perfect platform for it. Apart from thanking Dinesh Sir, Aditya Sir and Amar Sir for their continued support, I would also like to thank the audiences who made the film cross the Rs 100 crore mark.” The film is a tribute to Indian folklore, with themes such as unrequited love, consent and a reflection of modern society. – Directed by Aditya Sarpotdar, ‘Munjya’ also stars Sharvari and Mona Singh in lead roles.

Sharvari added, “I was filled with immense pride and joy to see the love the film has received from everyone. It was an honour to see Aditya Sarpotdar sir’s long-standing vision of finding and arbitrating the true audience, where I got the chance to play and experience the role of a modern woman and what she stands for in today’s times.” He said, “It is a film that has given me a lot, like playing the character of Taras and playing a character like Bela. Sharing the screen with Abhay and Mona ma’am has been a great learning experience.” Produced by Dinesh Vijan and Amar Kaushik under Maddock Films, ‘Munjya’ is now streaming exclusively on Disney+ Hotstar.
