Mumbai: Pre-monsoon structural survey of all old buildings
Mumbai: Every year a list of dangerous buildings is prepared before the monsoon. However, a serious matter has come to light that structural survey of the buildings is not done before preparing this list. Therefore, now structural survey of all old buildings will be done in a phased manner. The list of dangerous buildings will be declared according to this list.
As per the order of Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, the Housing Department has introduced a hundred days program. This matter has been given priority. Initially, structural survey of about 500 buildings will be done. This list will allow easy access to the list of objects that can be demolished or repaired immediately. An official of the Housing Department expressed confidence that building accidents that occur every time during the monsoon season will be avoided. In addition, it will be easy to support the funds requested from MHADA for the redevelopment of dangerous buildings. When the Housing Department requests for funds from the Finance Department, building-wise information is sought from the Urban Development Department. It also asks for a structural survey. Therefore, now it has been decided to conduct a structural survey of these old buildings and accordingly the classification of buildings will be prepared. According to this official, this will make it easier to review how dangerous a building is.
The trend of declaring a good building as dangerous in the name of redevelopment has increased in the last few years. MHADA buildings are no exception. This often happens with old dilapidated buildings. But now a structural survey of the old building will be done through MHADA and a report of the correct condition of the building will be made available. This list will be updated by MHADA from time to time.
