Movement restricted at India-Bhutan border in Tamulpur ahead of Assam elections

Tamulpur: In view of the Assam Assembly elections, movement has been temporarily restricted at the India-Bhutan border in Tamulpur district. This step was taken to ensure the Election Commission’s security arrangements and the fairness of the election process.

The local administration stated that this border restriction was implemented before and during the voting process. Officials stated that this decision is temporary and was taken solely due to election sensitivity and security considerations. While civilian movement, business, and visits to local markets may be affected in some parts of Tamulpur district, the administration stated that essential services and emergencies will be exempted.

Officials also stated that for security reasons, additional patrolling will be conducted along the India-Bhutan border to monitor any suspicious activity. Additionally, police and other security forces have been deployed to ensure that there are no irregularities along the border. This move is intended to prevent any illegal activity or external interference during the elections.

Local businesses and citizens have expressed mixed reactions to this decision. Many say the border closure could disrupt business and cause inconvenience to everyday life. Others, however, welcomed the move as aimed at ensuring security and fair elections.

The election atmosphere in Tamulpur district is considered sensitive. Therefore, the administration has increased election-related security measures in border areas. Officials have requested all residents to follow the administration’s instructions and immediately report any unusual activity to the local police.

The Election Commission recommended such measures based on the experiences of other states and union territories to ensure the freedom and fairness of elections. Based on the experience of previous elections in border areas in Assam, this decision has been taken to prevent any voter violence or irregularities.

The local administration and security agencies are ensuring that citizens face minimal inconvenience. Essential services, such as medicine, emergency transportation, and government functions, will remain uninterrupted. For this purpose, special passes and permission systems have been implemented.

As part of security measures, additional police and central security forces have been deployed at sensitive polling stations in Tamulpur. Drone surveillance and mobile patrolling have also been increased in the border area. The administration states that these measures will prevent any untoward incident.

Experts believe that such measures in border areas are necessary to safeguard the democratic process during elections. This ensures the safety of voters and election staff and maintains the credibility of election results.

Thus, the temporary restrictions imposed on the India-Bhutan border in Tamulpur district are solely intended to ensure election security and fairness. The administration has clarified that these restrictions will remain in place only until the elections, and normal movement will be restored thereafter.
