Movement of heavy vehicles on the Delhi-Dehradun Highway stopped from today.
Muzaffarnagar : In view of the Kanwar Yatra, significant changes have been made to traffic arrangements on the Delhi-Dehradun Highway (NH-58). The entry of heavy vehicles into the Muzaffarnagar district of Uttar Pradesh has been banned from midnight tonight until August 12. This decision has been taken to ensure the safety of Kanwariyas, facilitate smooth traffic flow, and prevent potential traffic jams.
According to the district administration and traffic police, trucks, dumpers, trailers, and other heavy cargo vehicles will be diverted to alternative routes during the restriction period. Vehicles associated with essential services may be granted exemptions subject to specific regulations.
Why was this decision taken?
During the month of Shravan, a large number of Kanwariyas return from Haridwar and other ghats along the Ganges with holy water, traveling from Delhi, Haryana, Punjab, and Western Uttar Pradesh. Consequently, the volume of traffic on the Delhi-Dehradun Highway increases manifold. Restricting the movement of heavy vehicles aims to ensure the safety of pilgrims and maintain smooth traffic flow.
Alternative routes for heavy vehicles
The administration has planned to divert long-distance cargo vehicles in advance. Heavy vehicles arriving from various states will be routed towards their destinations via Meerut, Shamli, Saharanpur, and other designated bypass routes to reduce traffic pressure on Muzaffarnagar city and the Kanwar route.
Advisory for light vehicles
Drivers of cars, motorcycles, and other light vehicles are also advised to check the traffic advisory before setting out. Motorists are urged to use alternative routes during peak hours and avoid unnecessary travel. Traffic police and security forces will be deployed at multiple locations along the highway.
Special arrangements during Kanwar Yatra
The administration has implemented measures such as barricading, CCTV surveillance, medical aid, ambulances, police deployment, and disaster management teams along the Kanwar route. Additional security arrangements have been made at sensitive locations to ensure a prompt response to any emergency situation.
