MLA Sajjad Shaheen inaugurated 3 Jal Shakti projects in Banihal

Srinagar: Reiterating his promise to accelerate infrastructure development in the Banihal-Gul constituency, National Conference leader and Banihal MLA, Sajjad Shaheen, inaugurated three important Jal Shakti protection works, totaling approximately ₹10.4 million, which will significantly boost the area’s water management and flood protection infrastructure.
The first project, approved at a cost of ₹5 million, aims to build a vital protection wall around the vegetable and fruit market in Banihal town, where approximately 250 vendors depend on daily trade for their livelihoods. A press release stated that this initiative will protect the market’s land from erosion and seasonal flooding, paving the way for the construction of a fully modern market in the future.
In addition, Shaheen laid the foundation stone for two additional protection works along the Bishlari River, totaling ₹5.5 million, located in Malikpora and Ganaipora Ward No. 5, near the old toll post. These works will protect two densely populated areas that are vulnerable to frequent flood damage. Addressing the crowd, Shaheen said that the newly launched projects demonstrate the government’s commitment, under the leadership of Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, to upgrade essential infrastructure and protect government properties in remote and flood-prone areas of the constituency.
He further emphasized that several major projects related to education, health, roads, water power, sports, and irrigation have already been approved by the current government and are set to commence work soon. He said, “These initiatives will have long-term benefits, strengthen public service delivery, and move Banihal-Gool towards sustainable development.” The MLA was accompanied by the Assistant Executive Engineer of the Water Power Department, EO MC Banihal, officials from the Flood Control Department, and senior National Conference officials. The locals expressed gratitude for the timely commencement of these important works and appreciated the proactive role of the MLA in taking forward the development agenda in the entire constituency.
