Methanol license process simplified in Tamil Nadu, online facility now available

Tamil Nadu: The government has simplified the licensing process for the use of methanol in the pharmaceutical industry. Methanol licenses can now be obtained online, which is expected to provide significant relief to pharmaceutical companies and educational institutions.
The Tamil Nadu Pharmaceutical Manufacturers Association has welcomed this government decision. Industry members have long demanded a streamlining of the licensing process.
Methanol is considered a vital solvent and raw material in the pharmaceutical industry. It is used in the manufacture of a variety of drugs, particularly cholesterol-lowering statin drugs and antibiotics like streptomycin. Furthermore, methanol is also used as a solvent in quality testing of medicines. It is also an essential ingredient for pharmacy colleges and research labs.
Until now, the industry has stated that obtaining a license to purchase methanol in Tamil Nadu was a cumbersome process. Strict regulations and lengthy procedures were affecting not only large companies but also small pharmaceutical units and laboratories. Many institutions also reported difficulties obtaining even small quantities of methanol.
In light of these problems, the government has decided to bring the licensing process to a digital platform. Applications have been made available through the “e-Kalal” website developed by the National Informatics Centre. Interested applicants can now apply online through this portal.
According to the government, this new system will also apply to applicants requiring less than 500 liters of methanol annually. This is expected to particularly benefit small industries, startups, and educational institutions.
This move will help streamline the production process in the pharmaceutical sector and reduce unnecessary delays. Furthermore, the digital process is expected to increase transparency and reduce the time required to obtain licenses.
This decision by the state government comes at a time when the pharmaceutical industry is focusing on promoting production and research activities. The new system is expected to provide relief to the industry and accelerate drug manufacturing and research efforts.
