MBBS-BDS counseling may begin on August 13.
Chennai. The admission process for MBBS and BDS courses for the 2026-27 medical education session in Tamil Nadu has reached its final stage. Counseling for a total of 13,999 seats across government and private medical and dental colleges will be conducted by the state’s Directorate of Medical Education and Research (DME). According to sources, counseling is likely to begin on August 13; however, the official schedule is yet to be released.
Thousands of medical aspirants in the state are eagerly awaiting the counseling schedule. Following the declaration of the National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test (NEET-UG) results, students are now focused on the seat allotment process. Admissions to seats across various categories in government medical colleges, government-aided institutions, and private medical and dental colleges will be facilitated through this counseling.
The Directorate of Medical Education and Research (DME) will oversee the entire process. Online counseling will be held for the 13,999 medical seats available in institutions across the state. Seat allocation—covering government quota, management quota, and other designated categories—will be carried out in accordance with established regulations.
The online application process for the current academic session began on June 29 and concluded on July 27. During this period, candidates submitted applications, uploaded documents, and completed the necessary formalities. With the application phase over, the Directorate is now engaged in preparing the merit list and finalizing the counseling schedule.
According to official data, over 72,000 students have applied for admission to medical and dental courses this year. Of these, more than 41,000 candidates applied for government quota seats, while over 31,000 registered for management quota seats. The high volume of applications clearly indicates a steadily growing interest among students in medical education in Tamil Nadu.
The counseling process will be conducted entirely online. Candidates will have the opportunity to select colleges and courses based on their rank, reservation category, and seat availability. After seat allotment in each phase, selected students must report to their allotted institute within the stipulated time. If a student fails to complete the admission process within the deadline, their seat will be made available for the next round of counseling.
Apart from state-level counseling, 15 percent of seats in government medical and dental colleges across the country are reserved under the All India Quota (AIQ). The admission process for these seats is conducted by the Medical Counselling Committee (MCC), which operates under the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS). Under the All India Quota, candidates get the opportunity to secure admission in government medical and dental colleges across various states.
The MCC conducts online counseling not only for All India Quota seats but also for MBBS and BDS seats in prestigious national institutions such as AIIMS, JIPMER, central universities, and statutory universities. Admission to these institutions is also granted based on NEET-UG merit.
Education experts anticipate stiff competition for medical seats this year as well. Government institutions remain the first choice for most students due to lower fees and superior academic facilities. Meanwhile, eligible candidates will also have opportunities for admission under various categories in private medical colleges.
The Department of Medical Education has advised candidates to regularly monitor all official notifications regarding counseling. Information concerning the merit list, counseling dates, choice filling, document verification, and seat allotment will be published on the Directorate’s official website. Students are advised not to rely on misleading information or rumors and to proceed with the admission process based solely on official announcements.
According to sources, the official counseling schedule may be announced soon. If the process begins as proposed, the first round of online counseling is likely to commence on August 13. Subsequently, seat allotment, reporting, and mop-up rounds for vacant seats will be conducted in various phases.
