Marijuana worth Rs 8 cr seized at Bhubaneswar airport, passenger detained

Bhubaneswar: In another major drug bust at Bhubaneswar’s Biju Patnaik International Airport, authorities on Saturday seized a large quantity of cannabis from a passenger arriving from Bangkok. Acting on specific intelligence, the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) intercepted the passenger at the Bhubaneswar airport and recovered approximately 8 kilograms of cannabis from his luggage.

According to officials, the contraband was cleverly concealed in the passenger’s baggage in an attempt to evade security checks. The seized cannabis is estimated to be worth approximately ₹8 crore in the international market. Sources indicate that the operation was carried out based on credible intelligence, leading to the successful apprehension of the suspect upon his arrival at the airport. The passenger has been taken into custody for questioning, and further investigations are underway to determine the source and destination of the contraband and the possible involvement of an international drug trafficking network. A few days ago, customs officials seized cannabis worth approximately ₹4 crore during a routine security check at Bhubaneswar’s Biju Patnaik International Airport, raising suspicions that the contraband was intended for circulation ahead of the New Year celebrations. One person was detained in connection with that seizure.
