MAPUSA: Mapusa traders demand withdrawal of proposed increase in shop rent

Mapusa: Members of the Mapusa Merchants Association met Mapusa Municipal Council Chairperson Priya Mishal and convinced her to address their concerns over the proposed increase in shop rents. The association expressed its collective opposition to the proposed fare increase citing its potential adverse impact on its businesses.

The association has given an eight-day ultimatum to the municipal council to reconsider the decision, failing which they have warned that they will be forced to take the drastic step of closing the market in protest.

During the meeting, representatives of the Mapusa Merchants Association told them that the proposed increase in shop rents was considered adverse to the economic sustainability of their businesses. He put to the Chairperson the challenges faced by businesses, especially in the current economic climate, and highlighted the potential consequences of such fare increases.

The proposed fare increase has created a wave of concern and urgency within the Mapusa business community, with traders seeking an amicable solution with the municipal authorities. The next week will undoubtedly prove crucial in determining the course of action, as both sides engage in talks to strike a balance between the interests of traders and the revenue of municipal administrations.
