Manipur: Indefinite prohibitory orders imposed in Bishnupur amidst security review

Imphal: The Manipur government has imposed indefinite curfew in the entire Bishnupur district from 7 pm on Saturday following concerns over the prevailing law and order situation.
In an order issued on June 13, 2026, the District Magistrate of Bishnupur prohibited the gathering of five or more persons in any public place within the district. The directive also bans carrying of firearms, sticks, clubs, spears, explosives and any other items that can be used to incite violence.
The move comes after Manipur Director General of Police Mukesh Singh, IPS, visited the district police headquarters in Bishnupur on Saturday to review the security situation, crime trends and ongoing operational challenges along with senior officials. During his interaction with the district police personnel, the DGP underlined the importance of anti-insurgency and anti-narcotics operations.
He also stressed the need for safe and sustainable rehabilitation of Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) and directed the officials to expedite investigation and disposal of cases under the Special Investigation Team (SIT). A coordination meeting was also held with Army and Central Armed Police Force (CAPF) commanders deployed in the district, in which emphasis was laid on strengthening security in the border areas during the ongoing farming season.
The order also bans rallies, processions and demonstrations as well as disrupting roads and essential services without the prior written permission of the District Magistrate.
However, these restrictions will not apply to security forces, government officials on duty and personnel of essential services including health, PHED, electricity department, education staff, municipal officials, media persons, ATM cash replenishment teams, financial institutions, child helpline, women helpline, elderly line services, telecom operators and judicial institutions under the jurisdiction of Manipur High Court.
Officials have warned that violators will face action under relevant provisions of the Indian Code of Justice (BNS), 2023.
