Manipur government extends internet suspension in Churachandpur district by 5 days

Keeping in view the prevailing law and order situation, the Manipur government has extended the internet suspension including mobile data services in Churachandpur district for the next five days i.e. till March 2. Officials gave this information on Monday. Joint Secretary (Home) Myengbam Vito Singh said in an order that the state government, after reviewing the prevailing law and order situation in Churachandpur, decided to continue the suspension of internet services, mobile data services and internet/data services through VPN Is.
The order said that mobile service providers have also been directed to ensure compliance with the order. The state government had ordered temporary suspension of internet services in Churachandpur on February 16, five days after a mob of 800 to 1,000 people entered the office premises of the Deputy Commissioner and Superintendent of Police, vandalized them and set fire to government properties. And important documents were damaged. Two people died and several were injured in clashes with security forces. A crowd entered the district office complex to protest the suspension of a head constable of Manipur Police after an alleged video of the constable with armed miscreants went viral on social media.
Twelve trucks and buses carrying material for relief camps in Churachandpur districts, parked in an office complex, were also burnt, an official statement said. The mob also set fire to the official residence of the Deputy Commissioner. There is also news of insult to the national flag in this incident. The statement said that following the incident, the ‘Indigenous Tribal Leaders Forum’ (ITLF), which claims to be the apex body of all tribal organizations of the Kuki-Zo community, issued several press releases/notices making direct threats against the Deputy Commissioner. Issued and also gave an ultimatum to the Superintendent of Police of Churachandpur to leave the district and close government offices.
